North Tipperary Final

"One Point Margin Defeats Roscrea"

Kiladangan 6-2 Roscrea 5-4

The North Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship was won by Kiladangan who defeated Roscrea by the close margin of one point at McDonagh Park, Nenagh on Saturday. Kiladangan, thus avenged last years narrow defeat.

On Sunday the game finished in favour of Kiladangan on the same lines as last year, but with a different result. In the 1942 final, a point scored from a free by JJ Maher gave Roscrea victory. On Sunday, the same player, just before the final whistle sent the ball whizzing the wrong side of the posts from a 70, a score which would have levelled the game. In 1938, the first year the Murphy Cup was presented, it was won by Kiladangan and it has been held by Roscrea since 1939, 1941, 1942 and in 1940 by McDonaghs.

A crowd of 3,700 spectators were present. Kiladangan had the better of the exchange in the first half and aided by a strong breeze they hemmed the Roscrea men into their own territory. Their strong robust hurling threw the champions out of their stride. The challengers were a goal up when an incident occurred in the Roscrea goal - McBrien, the Roscrea corner back, being ordered to the line and his loss meant a reshuffle. Martin Loughnane filled the berth coming up from the right corner forward and he put in some steady work. Kiladangan forwards missed chances and were worth two more goals, but unbalanced forward work saw the ball going wide when the Roscrea goal was at their mercy. They turned over with the lead of 4-2 to 0-1 and they were scarcely prepared for the powerful bid flung at them by Roscrea in the last 20 minutes.
Kiladangan seemed comfortable with a lead of 6-2 to 2-2 when Roscrea using hands, feet and every artifice they possessed stormed the Kiladangan citadel and put through 3-2 in an intensely exciting finish. They were nearly through for the winning goal when the ball went out for a 70. Kiladangan supporters breathed relief as the ball went past the outside of the post and the long whistle went. Kiladangan failed to stay the pace in the last 15 minutes, they tired fast. On the other hand, their great teamwork, combination and endurance of their opponents almost pulled the game out of the fire.

Kiladangan now meet Moycarkey in the Inter Divisional semi final. From the throw in Kiladangan had possession and setting a lively pace they had the ball in the Roscrea square when Kennedy had possession and Grace was through for a goal.

Sean Maher converted a fast shot from Danny Gleeson for a 70. Matt Coen sent the ball to the square - the ball was followed in by Devaney who was injured. Seamus McBrien was sent to the line and Kiladangan were flagged a point. Neill sent Roscrea attacking and W Gleeson put the ball across, where the Bears handled and Hogan cleared. Roscrea sent wide. A movement by Brussells and W Gleeson saw Roscrea pointing, Kennedy and Devaney had possession as Kiladangan attacked and the ball sent wide as S Maher saved. In the next attack, Danny Gleeson put Kennedy in possession for a goal and Kiladangan led by 2-1 to 0-1. P Devaney retired injured, being replaced by Rody Gleeson. Morrissey repelled a Roscrea attack and Bears relieved in midfield. Frees followed to Roscrea and Mick Loughnane placed to advantage, but Killeen and Morrissey repulsed the attack and Coen sent the ball to the square, Grace sending wide, after Rody Gleeson and Kennedy had handled. Kiladangan were playing with determination and were constantly on the attack, but JJ Maher and Loughnane, who had come down to McBrien's place, and Fletcher defended well. A Kiladangan ball struck the upright and went out. Next Killeen sent a midfield puck wide, following two 70's Matt Coen pointed. Two wides followed to Kiladangan. The Kiladangan defence was now hard pressed. M Ryan of Roscrea put in some useful work and was in hard luck with a long shot. D Gleeson, Hogan, R Gleeson handled and Kennedy finished with a well timed drive, but S Maher saved on the line and scooped the ball clear and Coen sent a 70 wide. After Morrissey had changed from the back line to the forwards, he went through for a goal - the ball going to the corner of the net. Morrissey was fouled 15 yards out and Killeen smashed a great shot to the net to leave Kiladangan leading by 4-2 to 0-1. Coen next saved from Gleeson and he stopped a rasper from Ryan a few minutes afterwards. There was some exciting play as the ball was driven from end to end and the hurling was fast. Roscrea beat off two exciting attacks and Kiladangan forwards were out of position when the ball crossed the goalmouth. Mick Loughnane made a long clearance and Killeen replied with a ¾ field ball. Kiladangan conceded a 70, but a wide resulted. Through Kiladangan were hurling with great dash, following up every advantage they were unable to pierce the defence for further scores and the half time score was Kiladangan 4-2, Roscrea 0-1.

On the resumption, Martin Loughnane filled his usual berth at top right forward and he was prominent in a Roscrea attack that went wide. Danny Gleeson in a good position sent wide. Paddy Devaney returned to replace Rody Gleeson. After Killeen cleared, O'Neill pointed for Roscrea. Grace brought down the next ball, Devaney connected, but the ball was sent wide. Killeen took a 25 yard free, but the ball was returned to the Roscrea end where Fletcher goaled. Kiladangan replied in a flash when John Gleeson raced along the wing and Kennedy put Danny Gleeson in possession to go through for a goal. Joe Fletcher retired injured and was replace by J Cunningham. A free on the 21 yard line to Roscrea was slammed to the net by Martin Loughnane and next Coen sent a ball to Grace and D Gleeson in possession beat the defence to scoop the ball to the net for Kiladangan's 6th goal. Roscrea replied immediately and T Hannon was through at the other end to leave the score Kiladangan 6-2, Roscrea 3-2. Kiladangan's defence held another fierce attack where Ryan, Loughnane and Fletcher were prominent. Kiladangan cleared a hot ball and Grace sent in, but Kennedy was late, S Maher driving clear. After wides by Roscrea, Hannon goaled and Brussells pointed from far out on the line. A free to Roscrea, 15 yards out was taken by M Loughnane and the ball went through for a goal. Roscrea were playing a great game now and the ball was being passed and repassed, hands & feet being brought into action to save the game. Coen just saved for a 70. O'Neill, Hannon and Loughnane were prominent and in another attack, Bears pointed to close the margin to a point. Roscrea forced a 70 and John Joe Maher came up to take the puck and sent it wide.
